1968 PORSCHE 911L: RARE TRANS-AM LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT!

Sarasota Café Racer and ex-PART (Porsche of America Racing Team) driver Bob Bailey blogs about his original (one of six built) lightweight Trans-Am racecar that he’s found and  putting

back on the track.

Freshly restored and ready for historic racing.

After I took delivery of my burgundy 911L racecar from Bob Holbert Porsche in Philadelphia, I brought it to the American Trans-Am Championship Race in Lime Rock, CT for its race debut on May 30, 1968. It was the first 911L exported to the U.S.

Delivered with most of the race options the factory could offer for Group 2 cars, I added Minilites, a roll cage and the number 22. It became a serious challenger in the under-2-liter class in the 1968-1969 Trans-Am Championship Series. Sponsored by the Barnsider Sirloin Pit and Tavern, Colonie Center,NY, I went on to campaign the car in 14 Trans-Am races over the next 15 months. My co-driver was Jim Locke.

Purchased from film produced Michael Scott after a five-year restoration by KZ Motorsports, my 911L has been brought back to its original racecar roots. Completed under the concept of “once a race car, always a race car,” it has been finished in its original color, numbers and 1968 T/A season trim.

911L engine has been blueprinted and set up for competition.

Originally painted burgundy with a gold stripe, we changed to white with a blue stripe for the 1969 season. It has been carefully updated to current vintage racing association specs with the addition of a roll cage, fire system and six-point seat belts. It still has its 100-liter center-fill fuel tank.

Fully caged and ready to rumble!
