redefines “Super Sports
Car.”
“The new Gallardo Superleggera is an uncompromising road
machine with racecar dynamics and a 200-mph top speed,” says Victor Young,
President, Lamborghini Sarasota (Florida). Compared with the already lean
Gallardo LP 560-4, the weight of the new Superleggera has been trimmed by 154
pounds. At 2,954 pounds (dry) it is the lightest road-going Lamborghini, and a
new arrival in one of the most exclusive market niche segments: Super Sports
Car.
One key factor is the exterior and interior components made
from carbon fiber. Engineers selected carbon fiber for the rear spoiler, sills,
diffuser, parts of the underbody paneling and the exterior mirror casings. The
center tunnel cover, door panels and the E-gear lever surround were also
fabricated from carbon fiber. The high-end material is also used for the sports
seats’ shells and the seats are clad in lightweight Alcantara. The car’s
performance is enhanced thanks to a better weight-to-power ratio and reduced
total mass, as well as lower CO2 emissions.
The Superleggera’s 5.2-liter (317 cubic inch) V10 engine
generates 570 horsepower and 398 foot pounds of torque. This puts the weight-to-power
ratio at just 5.18 pounds per horsepower and guarantees breathtaking
performance. The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera can go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4
seconds and flies past the 124 mph mark only 10.2 seconds later. Top speed is
202 mph.
Displacing 5.2
liters, the direct injection V10 achieves a specific output of 109.6 horsepower
per liter. Special features on this long-stroke engine with an aluminum
crankcase include dry sump lubrication and a cylinder angle of 90 degrees, thus
lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity and improving handling dynamics. To
ensure ideal combustion, the engine has an adjustable intake manifold and
continuous control of the chain-driven camshafts.
The model on which the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is
based, the Gallardo LP 560-4, is already a prime example of Lamborghini’s
lightweight engineering philosophy, weighing in at 3,108 pounds (dry). Its body
shell is made from aluminum, with molded node elements and extruded parts
forming an extremely stiff framework into which the aluminum panels are
integrated. The space-frame structure is impact-resistant and forms the basis for
The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera comes with the electronically
managed, six-speed E-gear transmission operated via steering wheel paddles, as
standard. Permanent all-wheel drive integrates a central viscous coupling
and a 45 percent limited-slip differential on the rear axle. In normal
circumstances, the power delivered is channeled with a ratio of 30/70 to the
front and rear axles. The weight distribution of the super-light Gallardo is

rear brakes that deliver uncompromising stopping power and are managed by the standard-fit
ESP stability control system. Optional six-piston fade-resistant, lightweight
carbon-fiber-ceramic (front) brakes are available.
Engineered to deliver race track dynamics and performance,
the Superleggera comes standard with all the amenities of a road car, including
standard air conditioning and power windows!
