Ferrari raises the bar on ‘bragging rights’ with its very limited production, 208 mph GTO
Ferrari’s new 599 GTO is an extreme V12 Berlinetta that has been developed for maximum performance on the road. The 599 GTO, based on the 599XX advanced experimental track car, is Maranello’s fastest ever road car. Limited to just 599 units, the 599 GTO benefits directly from the technological transfer from racing and set a record 1.24 lap time at Fiorano.
The Fiorano lap time provides just one indication of the potential of this car. Just as significant are the technical specifications – 670 horsepower in a 3,289-pound car representing a weight-to-power ratio of just 4.9 lbs/hp. It will accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.35 seconds and has a top speed of 208-plus mph!
Fundamental to the GTO’s performance is Ferrari’s innovative approach to chassis development. For the first time on a production car, handling is tuned for a level of responsiveness that is close to the limit thanks to highly sophisticated electronic controls. The result is the almost complete absence of understeer and a truly communicative chassis.
The 599 GTO is equipped with the latest and lightest, second-generation carbon-ceramic brakes. New aerodynamic innovations include wheel doughnuts that increase aerodynamic efficiency as well as improve brake cooling. Tires are the latest Michelin Supersports for greater road holding. The driver-car interface is also new with the adoption of the Virtual Race Engineer (VRE) that provides instantaneous performance information.
The GTO (Gran Turismo Omologata) designation instantly calls to mind two Ferraris that have entered the collective imagination as symbols of performance: the 1962 250 GTO, which swept the boards in GT racing in the 1960s and the 1984 GTO, Ferrari’s iconic modern supercar. The public debut of the 599 GTO will be at the Beijing International Motor Show at the end of April.
