2011 MERCEDES-BENZ CL: CUTTING EDGE COUPE

M-B’s latest version of its flagship coupe is a technological tour de force.

For 2011, the Mercedes-Benz CL550 is both more and less than its predecessor. There’s more horsepower, more torque plus a 10-15 percent increase in fuel economy. And it delivers all this with a V8 engine producing 47 more horsepower and 125 more foot-pounds of torque from 0.8 liters less displacement!

In addition to interior and exterior styling updates, there’s a new Sport package with exclusive body trim and 19-inch alloy wheels. Plus a host of  radar-based safety features including, Attention Assist, Pre-Safe Braking, Adaptive High Beams; Active: Body Control; Curve Illumination; Lane-Keeping and Assist  Blind Spot Assist.

The CL550 4MATIC is powered by a new twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter, 429 horsepower, V8 that reduces fuel use by 10-15 percent, while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions by more than 20 percent over the naturally aspirated 5.5-liter engine it replaces. Acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph takes just 4.9 seconds -- half a second quicker than its predecessor.

M-B’s top-of-the-line CL600 boasts a 510-horsepower twin turbocharged V12, producing 612 foot-pounds of torque. The CL600 is almost a half-second quicker to 60 mph, averaging just 4.5 seconds.

The 2011 CL-Class will make its U.S. debut in autumn of 2010.
