FERRARI 250 GTO: FOUR-WHEELED ART!

Since the late-1980s, Ferrari’s GT racecar has been priced like rare art. My Car Quest's Mike Gulett blogs about Ferrari’s ultimate collectible.

In the UK last May, a GTO (Serial #4675 GT) crossed the block at approximately $20 million, down from $25 million for one a couple of years earlier. Valued like the rarest of fine art, the 250 GTO, built between 1962 and 1964, represents Ferrari’s finest hour in GT racing. A total of 36 GTOs were built in 1962-1963 and just three Series II cars built in 1964.

Originally produced for FIA Group 3 Grand Touring Car competition, and priced at under-$20,000 in the U.S., buying one required the personal approval of Enzo Ferrari. Sales in the U.S. also required the approval of Ferrari North America’s Luigi Chinetti.
