M-B 300SL ROADSTER: DROP-TOP GULLWING!

The Gullwing Coupe is an iconic piece of art, but the Roadster is a real-world car to drive. And, its top goes down.

There are few cars in the world that can match the 300SL Gullwing’s mystique. Or value for that matter. But if you want to spend time driving a magnificent vintage luxury sports GT that doesn’t require a stepladder to get into, plus bask in the glorious sunshine, the 300SL Roadster gets the nod.

The Gullwing was produced between 1954 and 1957 and the Roadster took over the model designation from 1957 to 1963. While both models were powered by the same 3.0-Liter direct fuel injected, dry sump Six, the Gullwing’s 8.55-to-1 compression model put out 212 horsepower compared to the Roadster’s Six which was available with up to 222 horsepower with 9.5-to-l compression. From early-1961 to the end of production, the Roadster was fitted with far superior four-wheel disc brakes. The Roadster’s low-pivot swing axle rear suspension improved ride and handling qualities.

Both the Gullwing and Roadster 300SLs, right, were originally priced at approximately $11,000. In today’s collector car marketplace, Gullwings still command considerably higher prices, but the gap has been closing over the years. A total of 1,400 Coupes and 1,858 Roadsters were produced.
