DE TOMASO (HEMI) PANTERA FROM HELL!
The expression “God Is In The Details” doesn’t even come close to describing Goran Malmberg’s Hemi-powered Pantera GT-5 road warrior. Restored and re-engineered to serious racecar specs, this slick vintage GT sports car is packing a mid-mounted by 8.7-liter Chrysler Hemi dynoed at 700 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 630 foot pounds of torque at 5,300 rpm backed up by a ZF transaxle. It is essentially a show-bodied GT sports car hiding a racecar chassis and hot rod motor!
Weighing in at 2,600 pounds (stock Pantera with 351 Cleveland engine weighs between 3,100-3,200 pounds), the fully caged HEMIPANTER is powered by a stroked 426 Chrysler Hemi displacing 526 cubic inches. The roller-cammed “Elephant Motor” has 10.5 pistons, custom fuel injection using tunnel ram manifolding
and a Haltech E6-K engine management system.
The “details” of the build are totally documented by Malmberg on his website and they read like an illustrated book on the building of a professional road racer for the street. Not a single detail has been left out!
Malmberg is best known in Sweden for building guitars for Eric Clapton (Cream), Abba, Led Zeppelin; his custom models, like the Hemi Pantera Guitar, is marketed by Tip Top Music in Stockholm. Malmberg has also written the RACECAR CHASSISBOOK that chronicles the building of the high-profile Speedlab Corvette for the Nordic Supercar Series.
Malmberg’s Pantera started out as a stock rust bucket in 1986 and over 15 years transitioned into a GT-5-spec show winning, road rocket capable of handling, braking and generating skid pad numbers normally associated with professional racecars. Extreme doesn’t even begin to describe the HEMIPANTER. His son has inherited his passion for details and fast road cars and is currently constructing a 1967 Shelby Mustang supercar powered by a 700-cubic-inch monster motor!
