LEGENDS OF MOTORSPORTS AT WATKINS GLEN

Archie Urciuoli scores a podium finish in his Sarasota Café Racer sponsored Lola T70 Spyder!

Sarasota Café Racer Archie Urciuoli finished third in the USRRC/Can-Am/FIA Championship Of Makes class at the second race in the Legends of Motorsports series. Less than a month after receiving rave reviews for its debut at Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park, Bobby Rahal’s signature event visited historic Watkins Glen International for the second round of its inaugural season.

Legends of Motorsports is an annual series of premium historic racing events and related lifestyle experiences staged at legendary North American venues by Historic Motorsports Productions LLC (HMP). Based in Zionsville, Indiana, the Series’ principal owners at HMP are racers and businessmen Bobby Rahal, Peter Stoneberg and Zak Brown. Additional equity investors in HMP include Spire Capital Partners and Just Marketing International.

The Legends weekend event at the Glen on June 11-13 was a family-friendly celebration of the 1970s, with classic rock and disco music, and an F5000 feature race. International racing legend and Grand Marshal Vic Elford lead a celebration of the featured marque, Porsche. Attendees had an opportunity

to win a lap of the The Glen with 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner and Legends of Motorsports co-founder, Bobby Rahal.

On Sunday, June 13 there was a full grid of F5000 cars for the main event. These winged, open-wheel machines from Lola, Chevron, Lotus and March, were a sensation in the 1970s. Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter and Brian Redman are but a few who previously raced in F5000.

The Series’ mission is to brighten the spotlight on historic racing in North America.  More than a collection of races featuring rare and beautiful rolling museum pieces, each event is also a celebration of the automotive lifestyle. Classes for the Legends races are: USRRC/Can-Am/FIA Championship of Makes, F5000 Classic Monoposto, Group C/GTP/2-Liter Sports Racers/IMSA GT/ Thunder and Lightning, and Formula Libre.
