Dick Payne, who manages the Oldwick (NJ) Cafe Racers (car guy lunch group), races his big-block '70 Corvette ('73 nose) in A/P. It has a documented SCCA competition history dating back to 1973.
Jan Hyde was one of my earliest Corvette friends when I started VETTE Magazine in the mid-1970s. He owned a 1960 FI Corvette that he had bought in 1964 and Frank Dominianni’s (#69) ’62 327/360 FI Corvette racecar. I featured both cars in VETTE.
In recent years, he and Corvette aficionados Wayne Ellwood and Jim Gessner have done an incredible job creating and maintaining The Registry Of Corvette Race Cars, honoring competition Corvettes, past and present. This incredible interactive online reference library consists of a database, a chronology by race series, photo collections, incredible historic archives, details about Corvette special events and much more.
Frank Dominianni, now in his mid-80s, still runs Hi-Speed & Power, his speed shop on Long Island, where he built and dyno-tuned his racecars. I used to visit Frank when I was doing stories on high-performance cars back in the 1960s. He did a lot of winning behind the wheel of his yellow-trimmed red ’62 FI Corvette, above, including copping the SCCA B/Production Championship in 1964.

While Jan still owns his ’60 Fuelie Corvette, he sold the B/P racer in 2002 to Mike Yager who has also been a friend since the early days at VETTE. It, below, right, can be seen at his wonderful collection at Mid-America Motorworks in Effingham, IL. I’m proud to say that after all these years, Jan, Mike and Frank are still friends. And the #69 B/Production Corvette has been preserved to race another day!
