The mission: Cross eleven states and cover 2,800 miles in seven days in a luxurious oil burner with its steering wheel on the wrong side.
A Jaguar XF powered by a 2.2-Litre diesel mixed it up with yellow cabs, above, and left New York City today with the goal of arriving in Los Angeles in seven days time - a journey spanning over 2,800 miles and 11 states. With independent UK test drivers David and Alexander Madgwick at the wheel, the British-registered XF will cross a continent in order to evaluate just how frugal the 2.2-Litre four-cylinder diesel engine, not yet available in the U.S., can be.
Fitted with a GPS device, the RHD Jaguar’s daily progress as it travels from coast to coast – average speed and economy - can be tracked at either, www.facebook.com/Jaguar or http://twitter.com/#!/Jaguar (#XFCoast2Coast). Fresh images will also be posted daily. Strictly stock, the XF was shipped from Jaguar's global headquarters in Whitley, Coventry, making it the first diesel Jaguar to enter the USA.
Earlier this year a similar XF 2.2 was driven from the factory at Castle Bromwich to Munich – a distance of 816 miles – on a single tank of diesel, achieving an average of 57 mpg. Despite being the most fuel efficient Jaguar ever created, the XF 2.2 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.0 seconds before reaching a top speed of 140 mph. The XF 2.2 Diesel emits just 149 g/km of CO2.
